“What you do has far greater impact than what you say.”
– Stephen Covey
A lot of times, I hear people say they will do things or they believe a certain way. The problem is that their actions do not reflect what they say. People can continuously say that it is important, to tell the truth, but they lie in their business dealings or to their families.
As a parent, it is important to lead my children by example. I can tell them it is important to treat others kindly, but what would happen if I treated others rudely. If my children witness me treating others rudely, they would not follow or listen to what I have to say.
In our careers, it is the same. If people lead others and do the opposite of what they tell their employees or those they are over to do, then eventually the employees will stop doing what they want them to do. Their employees will most likely leave if they do not have any respect for their employer or supervisor.
Sometimes we think we do everything we say, but we really do not. We say one thing and do the opposite. Thinking before we ask someone to do something or stating our beliefs is vital to an effective leader. This is what I am trying to work on. Every time I say something to my children or to others that I lead, I do what I am telling them to do.
Challenge: I choose to do and not merely say. What do you choose?
