After reading the quote, I am sure you can guess what we are going to about today. I always tell my youth group or middle school students that the one way they can get to know themselves and really reach their goals is to speak positively about themselves. Positive words and thinking can help us see ourselves for the valuable people that we are. Negative words and thinking can tear down our true potential.
one thing that I have changed is how I talk about myself. In the past, I would have really put myself down and spoken negatively if I did something wrong or tried to work toward a goal. This doesn’t mean that mistakes or failures won’t happen, but those mistakes and failures will be learned from not just roadblocks that stop us from succeeding.
When we compare ourselves to others, we usually either try to lift ourselves up by putting others down or we put ourselves down because we can’t do something as well as them. Even when I am tempted to do this, I now start looking instead for the things the other person does well and admire those strengths. I appreciate the fact they are different from me and I appreciate how I am different than them. We are each unique, because it would be a boring world if we all had the same strengths and weaknesses.
My awesome husband, Brenton, and I are great examples of two people who are totally different but we work extremely well together. This great working relationship is due to the fact that we are so unique. A lot of my weaknesses are actually Brenton’s strengths and vice versa. We complement each other. There are strengths that we both have, but most of our strengths are complete opposites. This is something I respect and admire about Brenton.
Once I became positive about myself and my abilities, I could celebrate the strengths others. When I saw a friend or co-worker have a strength that was really amazing, I wouldn’t get upset if that wasn’t one of my strengths. Instead, I would remind myself that the person had a strength that is complementary to my strengths and not in competition with them.
It is also important to have a positive outlook concerning your weaknesses. There are two types of weaknesses. The first type you can work on and they can either become a strength or you can at least improve on them. They are things you need to help you succeed at your passion. Someone who is passionate about music may not read music well. If they find this weakness a hindrance to their goal, then they need to take classes that help them strengthen this skill.
The second type of weaknesses are those we just leave alone. An example of these types of weaknesses is my math limitation. In my life, I can do basic math calculations needed for financial purposes and I did really well in algebra 1 and 2. On the other hand, geometry was not my subject and I was lucky to pass college statistics with Brenton’s help.
In this case, if I am not going to do anything that needs these skills, I may leave them alone and just understand that this is a weakness. Now, if I decide to get my doctoral degree in education, I may have to strengthen my statistical ability because I would have to take statistical class on the master’s and doctoral level.
Whether you decide to work on your weakness or leave it alone, always maintain a positive attitude and be honest about your weaknesses. Those who recognize their strengths and weaknesses find it easier to recognize their passion, work toward goals based on that passion, and become successful.
Your strengths and weaknesses are apart of who you are, and you need to understand others have strengths and weaknesses too. It’s okay to admire those strengths, but don’t envy them or try to become them. We are all special and need to respect our strengths and understand our weaknesses.
